The Phoenix Symphony
As a former journalist who's met a lot of interesting people, sometimes it's hard to pick "stand out" moments among all the stories and events I've covered. I have to say, however, that our festivities earlier in January gave me a story for the record books.
On Jan. 11, The Phoenix Symphony named one of its musician chairs for eminent Arizonans and classical music lovers former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and her husband John Jay O’Connor, to recognize their many years of interest in classical music and their longtime patronage of The Phoenix Symphony.
In a post-concert reception, Justice O'Connor met with guests, and heard a rousing performance of a Scott Joplin waltz by Symphony bassoonists. The event was an honor for The Phoenix Symphony, and an addition to a great series of concerts that weekend. To read more about the naming, a press release about the event is located here:

Everyone who was there agreed that the Sandra Day O'Connor was as wonderful a person as anyone could hope, and obviously thrilled to be there. Equally thrilled, and eloquent in his thanks, was Erik Ludwig, the Symphony musician occupying the newly named John Jay and Sandra Day O'Connor Contrabassoon Chair (pictured with Justice O'Connor above). It was a great evening, and a wonderful time.

1 Comments:
it was a treat to see her; i've not seen her in person before.
Little surprises like that are nice 'perks' to an already pleasant experience of going to hear the ASO.
