An Interactive Ensemble

by Barbara Bingham-Deutscher
Associate Principal/Third Horn

Hello – I wanted to let everyone know about the Library Concerts coming up this weekend. The Phoenix Symphony Woodwind Ensemble is pleased to perform free concerts at the Cesar Chavez and Burton Barr branches of the Phoenix Public Libraries. Our repertoire ranges from Swan Lake to Harry Potter to Carmina Burana with individual demonstrations of every instrument – including the contrabassoon!

The Phoenix Symphony Woodwind Ensemble is one of four ensembles created within The Phoenix Symphony. While the orchestra as a whole presents Symphony for the Schools concerts at Symphony Hall, the Phoenix Symphony Woodwind, String, Brass, and Percussion Ensembles each travel to schools throughout the Valley to perform for schoolchildren.

These concerts are special to The Phoenix Symphony musicians because it gives us a chance to perform for and interact with young people on a more personal level. The Woodwind Ensemble, led by Assistant Conductor Kayoko Dan, presents a variety of music, information, and several students get the chance to play an instrument. This often brings howls of laughter as the courageous musician-to-be helps everyone learn how the sound is produced on the instrument. We hope the concerts motivate students to participate in their school music program. Most of us on stage were inspired to become involved in music in just such an atmosphere and are testimony to school music programs.

Music is such a wonderfully universal yet personal language. For many of the children, this is their first experience in the joy of live classical music. It is exciting to watch the different ways that they listen to and experience the music. The students and teachers are very enthusiastic and it is great to know that we gave them an opportunity to appreciate live classical music. I hope to see you there!

No matter one's opinion on some of the goings-on and politics of the orchestra, Community Engagement is one area where The Phoenix Symphony gets it right. Libraries, schools, teaching, book stores... they are out there giving exposure to the orchestra and themselves. I would hope many other comparible orchestras would look to TPS for leadership and example in this area.

Speaking of reaching out to the masses and getting needed exposure for the Phoenix Symphony:

Let's get a band out there to Chase Field on Wednesday and/or Thursday to play the National Anthem! Go DBACKS in the National League Divisional Playoffs vs. the Chicago Cubs.

Not only will there be a sellout crowd at the ballpark, the Phoenix Symphony would get national TV exposure!
