Celebrate "Armonía" With a Free String Ensemble Concert
Next week, high school orchestra students from South Phoenix will be joining The Phoenix Symphony String Ensemble for the annual Armonía year-end concert. The concert will feature music by Bach and Corelli, feature several student soloists, and finish with the two string orchestras playing side-by-side! This free concert will take place at the South Mountain Community Center at 7:00pm on May 20th, 2009. Please join us for an event that will have you tapping your toes and singing praises to the power of music education!
Translated “Harmony,” the Armonía program brings private music lessons to students in South Phoenix. In partnership with the Espiritu Community Development Corporation, the goal of Armonía is to build musical and life skills of students that attend the EDCD operated NFL-YET College Prep Academy. Now in its fifth year, over thirty students receive private music lessons from Phoenix Symphony musicians and over fifty students participate in community concerts and music workshops. Students study with symphony musicians who are heartfelt and passionate about music education. Teachers for the 2008-09 school year are Ron Whaley, violin; Mark Dix, violin/viola; Fred Chao, cello; and Arizona Opera Bassist Claudia Botterweg. Thanks to the dedication of these teachers, the Armonía students have gained tremendous musical growth as an entirely new world is opened up to them.
This event is appropriate for the entire family. Hope to see you there!
