Orchestras Feeding America
In January, a partnership was announced between the League of American Orchestras and Feeding America to organize a massive nation-wide food drive at symphony orchestra concerts acorss the country. One in eight Americans does not know where to find their next meal and according to the USDA, there are 36 million people at risk of hunger in the US, 12 million of which are children. Along with the food drive, the partnership is also intended to promote the new film The Soloist - based on a true story about a mentally ill homeless man (Jamie Foxx) in Los Angeles who is discovered by a newspaper columnist (Robert Downey Jr.) to have amazing abilities in performing on the cello. The film also features the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The Phoenix Symphony is participating in Orchestras Feeding America during its The BIG Big Band Pops concert weekend, March 6 - 8. Concert attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to drop off in the Symphony Hall lobby before or after each concert. Even if you can't attend one of the concerts, you may still contribute to the food drive by bringing food items to drop off during concert times throughout the weekend (Friday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, and Sunday 1:00pm - 4:00pm).
In a time of economic uncertainty and discouraging news, it is important for communities to join together and help those in need. Help us make Orchestras Feeding America a success!
