On the Air: Bernstein on Bernstein

Hosts Ken and Susan LaFave welcomed Jamie Bernstein as a guest on their radio program, "Arts on the Town" this evening. Ms. Bernstein shared some wonderful stories about growing up in the Bernstein household (that's Leonard and young Jamie pictured to the right) and also about the evolution of many Leonard Bernstein favorites. It served as a great preview of what's in store for you at our upcoming Pops concert, "Bernstein on Broadway". In case you missed the radio interview, you can listen right here! It was great to see, listen to, and watch the animated Jamie Bernstein on stage Saturday night for the Leonard Bernstein on Broadway concert.

The last time she appeared here, she presented a "revisionist" version of her father's Third Symphony ("Kaddish"). Instead of the composer's intended confrontation with his creator, Jamie changed the narrations to suit her interests in resolving issues she had with her deceased father. In some ways, it was more pallatable than Bernstein's angry outbursts against God. How odd that a narrative (explanation) can change the listener's reaction to the same musical material.

This time around, she simply gave some personal insights into what was happening in the composer's life, such as the birth of Jamie herself, that might have influenced the compositions. Her interactions with the singers added to the entertainment. She hosted a lovely evening of cross-browed classic pops.
