Highlights from Petrushka

As you can probably tell from the abundance of blog postings on the subject, we at The Phoenix Symphony are wild for Petrushka with our special guest, puppeteer Basil Twist. You've seen the previews, interviews and TV spots, but now catch a glimpse of the performance itself with these great excerpts from today's performance. Then, get your tickets and find any way you can to make it to Symphony Hall tomorrow (Saturday) night! (click here to watch this video in HD!)

I was at the Saturday night performance. This was an exciting night for the Phoenix Symphony. To see this wonderful concert all the way from Beethoven (excellent) to Stravinsky to a World premiere....I had to pinch myself to make sure I was not in New York, London or Vienna. Also, the abundance of young people from kids to teens to college student and FAMILIES going to the Symphony was unbelievable!!! One last note, keep adding innovative programs such as the puppets. While a piece or program may not be my cup of tea, it sure is great to see new faces at Symphony Hall.

I went to both performances (how could I resist after going Thursday and then seeing this post?). The last time I saw a staged version it was by Baryshnikov and the American Ballet Theater thirty years ago. I don't remember being quite as amazed by that as I was by the Phoenix performances. Doing this with a full orchestra on stage was pretty rad. Both Thursday and Saturday had a lot of attendees that clearly weren't regular concertgoers. I used to worry about children at these concerts but they're the best behaved patrons of all... and the ones we'll need to keep coming back.
