Basil Twist Talks Puppets and Petrushka

By now you've seen the preview video for this week's classics concert and had a glimpse into the the amazing art form of Basil Twist's puppets who will be dancing and flying through Symphony Hall creating a Petrushka experience like none other. During his visit to Phoenix this summer, Basil had many great things to say about his techniques so we wanted to share his complete interview here. Find out how big the puppets are, how they're made, how the choreography works and how the project evolved from being a small two-piano production into the full-scale orchestral and puppet spectacular you'll see this weekend. Check it out (or click here to go to the video's page):

But that's not all! This weekend's classics concerts will also see the world premiere of "March of the Metro" by composer Michael Daugherty. This piece was commissioned by avid Symphony supporters, Clem and Mary Jo Hellmann who wanted to commemorate the special occassion of new mass transit in Phoenix which will make it easier than ever to get to Symphony Hall. You can now hear a synthesized preview of the complete march right here! (mp3 format)

If you haven't found your tickets for this historic weekend of concerts, you can find them at this link or by calling the Box Office at 602-495-1999.

One of my favorite movie scenes is the puppet ballet in "Being John Malkovitch" set to Bartok's music. I have yet to see Mr. Twist's production so I am not comparing the two. I never was sure if that scene was intended to be sincere or over the top. Either way it is the only image I have of this type of collaboration going into these concerts.
